Cocoa, one of nature’s many miracles, is in fact the great super-food that many people seek. Cacao is packed with vitamins and antioxidants that make it almost a super food.
Cocoa, Mind and Mood
Another dimension of the benefits of cocoa and chocolate consumption concerns mood. Cocoa is rich in agents such as Theobromine and Phenylethylamine that enhance the production of various feel-good chemicals in the brain, notably, Serotonin and dopamine. This means that cocoa possesses anti-depressant, mood-elevating properties. This is no surprise to the any millions of people who self medicate with chocolate every day.
Cocoa and your heart
Recent research studies have shown a link between cocoa and cardiovascular health, with reduced risk of blood clots, strokes, and heart attacks. Cocoa contains over 700 known compounds. Of particular interest to scientists are the antioxidant compounds in cocoa. According to a study conducted at Cornell University, the antioxidant concentration in hot cocoa is almost twice as strong as red wine. Cocoa's concentration was two to three times stronger than that of green tea and four to five times stronger than that of black tea.
